I volunteered at two places. The first place was Mattoon Community Food Center. In disadvantage we learn to assume diversity and that looks can be deceiving, you cannot tell by looking if someone has money or not. Also we should be accepting to all and if you are able to volunteer your time, money or resources you should. The individuals that were also volunteering were mostly members of the Fields Church. I gained a church to attend on Sundays while in Charleston. This service helps feed those in need. By packing boxes full of different types of foods and beverages. They have a list of how many boxes they will need for a single person to a family of four or more. Less people that they provide food for will go to bed hungry. This was a nice experience. It is great that so many people that I met at the community food center have the desire to help others.
I also volunteered within Full Gospel Church outreach program for the elderly who have lost their spouse. There may come a point in time in everyone’s life where they need help. If you are able to help someone you should do so. The networking allowed me to obtain a summer internship within a funeral home. The church outreach program can help those who have lost their spouse. Sometimes you do not know how much you relied on someone until they are gone. The program helps elderly by cooking dinner for them, cleaning their home and running errands for them. It was very rewarding helping clean up a home for someone who is not able to do so themselves anymore. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I was unable to take before and after picture because the church members wanted to keep the client confidential. But I can tell you it was a transformation for sure. Every space was clean and visible after we finished unlike before we started.
