Landon's Benefit

I chose to volunteer at a benefit for a little boy that has been struggling with cancer. The benefit was held in my hometown and they got people to play volleyball and donate money and baskets. There was a volleyball tournament, concession stand, and a silent auction going on throughout the day. I was an amazing day to watch. The little boy and his mother came home from St. Jude’s Hospital 3 days before the benefit so the whole family got to come to the benefit together. It was amazing thing to watch. The little boy, Landon, only has a centimeter of cancer left in him and they have to watch it, but it is so small for what he has overcame, but they are still watching it very close and praying.
This volunteering experience reflected the class because you never know who might need help and who will help you. The whole town came and helped and gave what they could for this family, because they know they need the help. This family is an above average family. One little thing can forever change you; such as your one and half year old getting cancer.
I was working in the silent auction room. I was working with the people that put the whole thing together for a while, but then they had to go over look the volleyball games. So I was running the silent auction room by myself. I was working with professionals that were well organized and friendly. I gained how to successfully put together a benefit and what to do. This was a very good learning experience for me.
This benefit had a very big effect on the community. The whole community was involved. The fire trucks wanted to give Landon and his family a ride to the benefit so they rode around town on fire trucks and ended at the benefit where there were hundreds of people waiting for him. The benefit ended up raising over $10,000, and they couldn’t have done it without the community.
I am really glad I had to do this assignment because I would have never volunteered for the benefit. I really enjoyed myself while I was volunteering. I was awesome to see Landon back in his hometown and running around with his family. I was nice to see his mom and dad back together and somewhat at peace. I really enjoyed talking to people about the silent auction and talking them into buying t shirts so the money could all go to pay Landon’s bills. This was a very good assignment. I volunteer for American Cancer Society on a regular basis, so to step out of my comfort zone was nice.
